A wee bit of candy

It's almost time for St. Patrick's Day! I made these little pots of gold for the Sugar Baby's class. I couldn't do chocolate coins because of allergies, so I figured butterscotch discs would be a close second. In a rare moment of forethought, I bought the little pots back in November at Target after Halloween.

Cute candy jar crafts

Just sitting around, waiting for Irene to come knockin' on the door. In the midst of some mindless surfing, I found this at This Old Chair:

Don't you just love these? They're candlesticks that have jars hot-glued to the top of them. So fun!

A model of my next house

After the previous post about "Ye Olde Sugar Wafer Castle," I got an e-mail from Yumster Philly. She sent these awesome pictures of a castle her Grandmom had created, along with an original magazine article on how to make this fantasy structure. How cool is that?So on Day 2 of the Dreaded Winter Break (as opposed to the Dreaded Spring Break which will occur in just a few more weeks), the Sugar Baby and I headed to the grocery store with nothing but an empty cart and a sense of wild abandon in the candy aisle. We bought sugar wafers and gumdrops, licorice and Puckerooms, Vienna Fingers and vanilla wafers. I unearthed some Smarties, lollipops and ice cream cones out of the closet.
We started by ingesting as much as we possibly could until our stomachs hurt, then we got to work.
Two hours later, Voila! A sugary sweet hot mess. Some things I learned along the way:
  • Use frosting like most normal people would. Yes, for some bizarre reason, I initially started gluing the sugar wafers onto a shoe box with Elmer's. Why glue, you ask? I don't know. Even the Sugar Baby questioned my decision. Frosting works so much better.
  • Have a vision before you start. Otherwise, you'll end up with something that looks like it was crafted by Antoni Gaudi.
  • And, most importantly, eat lunch first.

Make Your Own Creme Eggs!

I'm not a big fan of Cadbury Creme Eggs-- way too sweet for me-- but when my friend KrisFromHawaii sent me a link on how to make your own on Instructables, I thought that was really cool. But then when I saw that they are having a candy making contest, well now.... Check it out.

Ye Olde Sugar Wafer Castle

For many children throughout this great country, this week is winter vacation. Which means that many parents are counting down the hours until happy hour/bedtime/next Monday. What is one supposed to do with all these endless hours of free time? Take a cue from my friend's friend's niece Brooke who decided to get crafty with sugar wafers, frosting and gumdrops. Sour fruit roll-ups were used for moss and flags. Apparently there's a guillotine in there somewhere, too. In any case, I think this is a brilliant vacation week activity. Clean out your cupboards. Unearth all that leftover Halloween, Christmas and Valentine's candy and give the kids some some frosting and detailed blueprints of the Parthenon, then go to town! Only four more days 'til the weekend.

Candy Fun Fun!

Mrs. Connection and I have gone out together, sans children, exactly three times in the 2 or 3 years we've known each other. Two of those times have been Costco trips. I know, I know... pathetic, right? (Although I will say that they were the two most fun Costco trips a person could have.) In any case, during one of these ventures, we stopped at Barnes & Noble and Mrs. Connection found this for the Sugar Baby: Yum Yum Crafty Fun!
I mean, seriously, how perfect is that for the kid that makes candy trees out of construction paper and cuts out photos of cupcakes from magazines? This week I brought it out so we could have some yum yum crafty fun. I will say, the kit is assembled very nicely. Each project comes in its own bag, so you don't have to go rifling through all the paper and stickers trying to figure out what goes where. The execution of the projects, however, wasn't quite as polished as the picture on the box.
Yeah, that thing on the right-- it's supposed to be a swirly lollipop. And the triangle on the left is a piece of three-layer cake.
My house is now littered with stray bits of tissue paper and stickers. But as a gift for a 4-year-old candy-obsessed boy (or a 39-year-old candy-obsessed mom), it was very fun. Not as fun as a trip to Costco the Saturday before Christmas, but still pretty amusing.

Candy Craft: Turn Your Mint Tins into Magic

Liesl von Schokolat graduated from 8th grade last week. She's made me a proud auntie. I bought her a necklace, but I thought that I'd rather give it to her in some sort of funky box instead of the usual ugly white box. So I pulled out an empty mint tin and started playing around. First, I painted it black, then I glued on some decorative paper. On the lid, I put stickers of her initials and inside, I collaged some stuff from an old book I had. I gave it a few coats of collage medium and Voila! A mini jewelry box.
