Candy Corn M&M's
The M&M's are the large size, like the peanut butter ones. They are white, orange and yellow and the inside is candy corn-flavored white chocolate. I didn't really think I'd like them, as I'm not a big fan of white chocolate and the idea of candy corn flavor kind of freaked me out. I have to say, though, they're really good. The flavor is subtle. There are times when I was eating them that I really had to concentrate to get the candy corn flavor instead of just generic white chocolate sweetness. I like the ratio of crunchy shell to creamy insides. I wonder what a regular plain M&M would taste like if it was in this bigger form. I think I would love those, but you never know. In any case, I definitely recommend these to get you in the fall spirit.

Candy Corn Cordials: The Perfect Pairing with Halloween Candy

I let the candy corn soak in vodka in the fridge for about five hours. The candy corn disintegrated, thus turning the vodka a lovely bright orange. I strained out the solids using a coffee filter, then added the Grand Marnier, lemon juice and egg whites. (I'd read a review that said the egg whites were essential for the frothy nature of the drink, but frankly they just grossed us out.) How did they taste? Actually really good, but nothing at all like candy corn. They tasted like an orange/lemon martini. I'm going to experiment with some ideas for Christmas. Chopped up candy canes seem like an obvious winner. Maybe, though, I'll try ribbon candy. Any other ideas?

Chocolate-Covered Candy Corn: Yay or Nay?

But I was more attracted to the display of funky candy corns. In addition to the good old regular kind, they had tangerine, toffee, caramel apple, cinnamon and a bunch of other flavors. (Cybele did a review of the Toffee ones, which I haven't read yet because I didn't want it to influence my taste buds.) I decided to go for the original chocolate-covered.
As noted in a previous post, Target brand candy corn is actually made by Zachary Confections. It seems that every brand of candy corn has it's own unique little hint of flavor. To me, the Zachary brand seems to have more of a rum flavor as opposed to say Brach's, with its buttery honey popcorn flavor.
So how does candy corn taste when combined with chocolate? Not so great, in my opinion. The first couple of chews feel and almost taste like a chocolate-covered raisin, but then you get a salty, rummy taste of candy corn. They're fine, just not something I'd seek out. Maybe that's partly due to the chocolate. It wasn't very good quality. Kind of grainy and tasteless with a high waxy sheen.
The tangerine ones intrigued me, but I've got to admit, I'm candy corn purist. How about you?

The 411 on Candy Corn
I bought two.
Only after he was scarfing the bag of apple crisps when I noticed on the back: Product Made in China.
GAH!
Those of you who are regular readers know my feelings about food made in China. (More info here.) I don't particularly care to have my child eat something that comes from a country where there are no food regulations. Anyhow, the reason I'm saying this is because I further investigated a reader's question about Halloween candy. To be precise, she wanted to know if there is candy corn made in the U.S.
Happily, the answer is yes. The most common brand, however, (Brach's) is made in Mexico. (Same with their Melocremes). Mayfair candy corn and Mellowcreme Harvest Mix (pumpkins, corns, skull-and-crossbones and cats) is made in Pakistan.
But if you're jonesing for some Made-in-the-USA candy corn, check out these brands:
Jelly Belly: they have standard candy corn, as well as giant-sized candy corn in vanilla, chocolate and cinnamon. They also have a Fall Festival Mix of mellocremes: lemon corn cobs, orange pumpkins, maple walnuts (which I think look more like brains), and Giant Corn. These are pricier than the big bags of candy corn you see all over the place at Halloween, but you can usually find them cheaper at places like Marshall's and Home Goods.
Zachary Confections: they make candy corn and mellocreme pumpkins. (Note: they sell their products at Christmas Tree Shops). It's also interesting to note that Zachary makes the Target brand candy corn: see this article.
This is hardly a comprehensive list, but hopefully it will be a good starting point for all you candy corn lovers out there!

Candy Corn Cordial

Any recipe that starts with, "Combine the candy corn and vodka in an airtight container" is alright with me! Big thanks to Frau Marzipan for pointing me to the October issue of Food Network Magazine, which has several cool candy corn recipes in it, including this Candy Corn Cordial. I'm thinking a Halloween cocktail party might be in order this year!

Gummy Candy Corns

I took No-Nuts back to school this week and helped her move into her dorm. The first thing she wanted to do was move her bed around to face the opposite direction, so she got one of the R.A.'s on duty to do the heavy lifting while she crawled under the bed to set up the risers. Unfortunately, the bed landed on her finger instead of the riser, thus "breaking" her finger (she claimed), which meant that I got to put all of her stuff away--including all 35 bathing suits-- while she nursed her wound with a bag of frozen peas (which, by the way, she ate half of, even though they were frozen). Then I spent the night in her dorm room (yes, I really did), which I think pretty much absolves me of all Auntly duties for the rest of the year, at the very least. In any case, it turns out that her school is located near the Munson's Chocolate factory. I worked at one of their retail stores during college (best job ever!), so I thought I'd stop in to see what the factory digs were like.
They're very secretive over there; no tours, although they do show a video of life behind the scenes. I got all nostalgic and regaled No-Nuts with my stories of working at the chocolate shop: how the toilet got plugged when the night shift flushed a pound of fudge down it and I had to deal with the mess the next day; the time I was working alone and a mouse ran across the floor and I jumped on the counter; how we used to dare each other to eat the grossest stuff in the store (and that's how I discovered my love for dark chocolate orange jellies which they no longer make), and how one woman flipped out on me because she didn't like the way I wrapped her chocolate poker chips and said her five-year-old daughter could've done a better job, at which point I said, "Fine. Here's some wrapping paper. Let her do it."
Anyhow, to make a long story short, they had these gummy candy corns which I thought were so cute. They have the same bite as Wonka Puckerooms (not as soft as a gumdrop, not as hard as Dots), but the flavor is actually candy corn. That's what it's supposed to be anyway, although it almost tastes like buttered popcorn jelly beans. No-Nuts said she thought she liked them at first, but then realized that if she wanted candy corn, she'd just eat candy corn. Good point.
These aren't made at the factory; the label says Made in Spain, so I'm guessing you can get them at lots of specialty candy stores. They'd be really cute on cupcakes. And speaking of cupcakes, stay tuned ... the Sugar Baby went to his girlfriend's birthday party today where he got to decorate his own cupcake with candy. You won't want to miss this one.

Assorted Brach's goodies

Alexandra gave me a grab bag o' goodies for my birthday. The girl has a keen eye for stuff that I haven't been able to find! First, the Brach's Soda Poppers. These are hard candies with a chewy center (kind of like those little candies that look like strawberries). The first one I tried was Dr Pepper, because that's the only soda I really like. At first I was impressed; it seemed to have that same complex flavor profile that the actual soda has. But then after about 30 seconds, something went terribly wrong. It got all weirdly kind of root beer-like. I ended up spitting it out.
The Orange Crush was much better. It had that orange POW! of the soda. I haven't tried the other two yet: 7Up and A&W rootbeer.
The other goodie was Brach's Chocolate Caramel Candy Corn. I opened the bag and took a whiff. It was kind of strange. Not at all chocolatey or caramelly. More chemical. Then I tried one. It was ... icky. I don't know if I was just expecting it to be more chocolatey or what, but these definitely won't be replacing the traditional orange, yellow and white ones. Or even Indian corn.
No-Nuts is here for the weekend and she tried both candies. She definitely got a caramel taste out of the candy corn, and she liked the Soda Poppers. So there you have it.

The Return of the Candy Corn Kisses!

Good Work!

Here we have evidence of the Baron's unusual candy find: Butter Toffee Popcorn Candy Corn. Personally, I just don't get the whole popcorn-flavored candy trend. I know that there's a secret society of people who go nuts over Buttered Popcorn Jelly Bellies, and I just don't get it. But then again, I'm not much of a popcorn lover. Kudos to the Baron for finding these, though, even if he ended up spilling them all in the car.

'Twas the Night Before Halloween ...
Alexandra called today to wish me a Happy National Candy Corn Day. My goodness, I almost forgot! So I hope everyone's enjoying the last of the corn, be it regular or Indian, and getting excited for tomorrow's big fun.

The Present
I returned home from a day at the spa (oh, what a life I lead!) (actually, I got a gift certificate last year and I had to use it before it expired) and there was a big, white box on my doorstep with a Halloween plate on top. I lifted the box up and got a whiff. No. It couldn't be, could it? It was! It was THE Chocolate Cake!
Sweet, wonderful June baked me a miniature version of the cake and left it for me. It even has Indian corn on top! How awesome is that? I'm going to go cut a piece in exactly eight minutes.
While I was on the phone with Alexandra, she asked if it was Indian corn or American corn on top. American corn! Hee hee. That led me to ponder out loud why they call it "corn"-- it doesn't look like corn at all. And then all of a sudden, for the first time in my entire life, I realized that it's supposed to be a corn kernel with the pointy end sticking into the cob and the round end being the actual corn. Wow. I never knew.
And speaking of candy corn, the Baron finally reared his head today after a long silence. He had this very poignant story to tell:
Candy Corns are sacred in my house. It is really the only candy that brings a smile to my face. I remember being really young and Mom telling me if you want good luck you have to bite exactly between the two color lines. If you get one color on both sides of the bite, you win great luck for the day. I have tried this for 38 years and not one successful bite. But I will keep trying until my high sugar kicks in and I stroke out.
Isn't that sweet? Although don't believe him: wave some salted licorice fish in front of his face and you're sure to get a grin.
Candy Corn Kisses Mania!
On another note, please stand by as I'm experiencing some technical difficulties. I have LOTS to report, though, including pictures of my birthday candy haul, my most recent paintings and one very, very exciting present.

Candy Corn Kisses!

The wrapping is really cute: silver, orange and yellow swirly stripes. When you open the bag, you definitely get a very distinct aroma. Maybe some people will think "candy corn," but I instantly thought "Butter Rum Life Savers." Interesting, because I really like BR Life Savers. The kisses themselves are really cute: a layer of yellow, then orange, then white. How do they taste? Very sweet, very buttery. Unlike a regular Hershey Kiss, you wouldn't want to eat a whole handful of these. But I liked them more than I thought I would. These would be fabulous as the decoration on cupcakes or chocolate cookies, which is what I plan on doing with them!
