Candy Jewelry and Ornaments

Please stand by while we here at Candy Yum Yum suffer through a bout of pink eye. In the meantime, check out these goodies I found on Etsy. I just love that website; do you think I can do all my Christmas shopping there?

Little Boys + Tired Mommies+ Candy= Good Fun!

Let me begin with a disclaimer: The Sugar Baby is an absolute angel. A perfect boy in every way. Oh sure, he's had his moments, like when he lodged a penny in Sue MKAFFGGF's husband's gear shift, or the night he woke us all up for chocolate, or the day that led to this, but overall, he's a pretty good kid.
But lately, he's been going through an independent stage. So, you know how when you're sitting around, finally having an adult conversation, when your radar goes off? The one that says, "It's too quiet in there. What's going on?"
Yeah, well, we had one of those moments last weekend.
We were staying in Grandpa's kick-butt mansion on wheels motorhome, and frankly, I was experiencing one of those "JUST STOP TALKING TO ME GO PLAY BY YOURSELF AND LET ME ENJOY THIS VODKA TONIC!" times. So the Sugar Baby trotted off and was playing quietly by himself--with a Starburst he had gotten earlier in the day.
Guess what? Starbursts are just the right size to fit in the hole for the door latch of a motorhome. Yes indeedy, he wedged that little square into a hole because that's what holes are for, right?
Grandpa got out the tool box, but to no avail. It's wedged in there forever. As for the Sugar Baby, Grandpa got him another Starburst.

Let's Get This Party Started!

As the kids say, "Woot!" This Friday will be the six-year anniversary of Candy Yum Yum! How cool is that? To celebrate (in addition to the Candy Giveaway), I'll be posting some of my favorite blog entries from years past.

I now give you some gems from 2006:

Circus Peanuts. My mother is the only person in the whole world who likes these orange-colored marshmallowy things. I bet secretly deep down she doesn't even like them. She probably buys them because she feels sorry for them. That's the way I feel, too. I hate them, but still have a fond affection for them. Kind of like the lamp in the IKEA commercial. The Circus Peanuts are not real. They don't have feelings.”

(2009 Editor's Note: Check out the IKEA lamp commercial here.)

Sunday, Aug. 10, 2003:

Just got back from Washington D.C. where Joy and I shared a wonderful candy moment on the Metro. We were sitting across from a guy who reached into his CVS bag and pulled out a package of Starburst. Now, instead of tearing the paper away at one corner, this is what he did-- he snapped the package in half in the middle! Brilliant! The best part was when I looked over at Joy and she looked over at me and we both knew we were thinking the same thing. Ha! Joy, however, was bothered by the fact that now all the little Starbursts would be loose in the bag rather than all nicey-nice in the package. Something to consider.

What I would eat now if I wasn't doing this dang Weight Watchers:

  • dark chocolate nonpariels
  • vanilla cupcake with chocolate frosting
  • grande moccacino with whipped cream
  • chocolate chip cookies
  • cream horn
  • Any of the following: Devil Dogs, Ring Dings, Funny Bones, Yankee Doodles
  • Scoop of chocolate ice cream with hot peanut butter topping
  • Goldenberg's Peanut Chews

What I'm really eating: Pasta Fagioli and a glass of water

Gummy Smackdown: Sour Patch Xploderz vs. Starburst GummiBursts

In the left corner, Sour Patch Exploderz.

Strengths:
  • They satisfy my need for sour
  • They're not too sweet
  • I like all the flavors
  • The sugar-dusted outside provides a nice texture contrast to the gummy part
Weaknesses:
  • I hate the typeface they use. Makes me think this is candy made in someone's kitchen with their community-college-attending son doing the logo on his iMac.
In the right corner, Starburst GummiBursts.

Strengths:
  • Well-known brand with professional logo
  • Starbursts have their own unique flavor

Weaknesses:

  • Texture is like rubber instead of that hard/chewy of traditional Starburst
  • Inside is thick and oozy

While it looked like Starburst may have had the upper hand since they're more mass-market, Sour Patch snuck up from behind and put the smackdown on Starburst. No question here. Sour Patch Xploderz wins hands-down!
